Can I Compost Milk?

(From the Dairy products category | 1 comment - join the conversation)

milkIt’s best not to compost milk – or any other dairy products.

While it will rot down, rats or other undesirable animals may be attracted to your compost heap in the meantime.

You could add it but it’s not going to add a lot of bulk to your heap and in our opinion, the risk isn’t worth the reward.

If you can catch the milk before it goes completely sour though, use it for baking or turning into cheese.

  1. Thank you so much for this site! It is so helpful. Question about the milk- what about expired breast milk? I’ve read that the bacteria in it speeds up the decomposition process.
