[…] If you have clothes that are 100% natural fiber (e.g., linen, hemp, etc.), then compost those bad boys! Word of caution: Synthetic fibers are not compostable. So be sure to check your labels because a “cotton” shirt may use polyester thread in the stitching, which won’t break down. That said, these threads should be easy enough to remove once everything else has decomposed. 7 […]

In your paragraph below, I suggest you write: "is one of the reasons why we make clothes from them etc.

"Items made from entirely from pure wool, cotton, silk, linen, hemp and ramie (or a blend of any of those) will compost down – but they will all take a while (their durability is one of the reasons why we make them from them rather than, say, paper)."

my grandmother cut up old clothes into 2inch long and half inch wide strips and made rugs, using burlap as the base, with a rug hook these can be tucked in closely and also if they are cut into longer strips they can be crocheted into rugs too. I am over 60 years old and this seems like a long long time ago but a nice way to use old clothes. once the rugs are really old then compost them.

My school, Susie E Tolbert, is doing a robotics project. We are trying to find information about cloth composting. We would be very grateful if you could share with us any information you have about composting clothes, particularly this question-What is the impact of cloth composting. Do you have any suggestions for this? If so, please reply to the e-mail address submitted with this message.

Thank you

My wife is 'forcing' me to throw away my favorite shorts. They are all ripped and faded but I like them
I've heard that cotton (and wool) clothing can be composted as they are natural products.
Has anyone here actually done this? Should they be cut up into pieces or just chucked in? And do they break down easily or very slowly?

I'd like to know if I can dig a hole like 3-4 feet, then fill it with water and some of the returning dirt, then put some old clothes in there, will it be composted or if earthworm will come out and eat them?

[…] Compost your clothes. This is something that I’ll have to read up on, but I do know that it works for natural fibres. Synthetic materials are best recycled. […]
